ONC finds rural hospitals lag behind larger systems in terms of interoperability

Health system interoperability is improving as 88 percent of organizations report they are participating in EHR data sharing, according to a January ONC report.

The report analyzed the state of hospital interoperability as of 2021 and identified six key interoperability trends:

  1. Since 2017, the number of hospitals integrating patient health data into electronic health records has grown by 40 percent.
  2. In 2021, 39% of hospitals reported that they are participating in at least one of the four national measured networks.
  3. The use of information obtained electronically from external sources doubled compared to rural and small hospitals from 20 percent to 40 percent between 2017 and 2021.
  4. Rural and smaller hospitals lag behind their larger counterparts in four areas of interoperability in 2017 and 2021.
  5. In 2021, three-quarters of hospitals reported that they had implemented bulk data export technology in their electronic health records.
  6. Analytics and reporting has been the most common use of bulk data export technology in hospitals and healthcare systems.
