NYPD detectives demoted months after being caught drunk on duty at Electric Zoo music festival

Three NYC narcotics detectives charged with drinking while on duty at last year’s Electric Zoo music festival have been demoted, Daily News has learned.

The detectives were demoted to officers over the weekend, several police sources told the Daily News. Three investigators were stripped of their weapons and shields last fall after they were caught drinking in the VIP section at a Randall’s Island concert, officials said.

The lieutenant and two sergeants who were in charge of the detectives remain on the reassignment as the investigation continues, sources said.

In light of the allegations, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell last year cleared a Manhattan narcotics unit up north where drunken detectives were stationed ahead of a music festival that ran from Sept. 2-4. A dozen detectives and their superiors, including Deputy Chief Brian McGee and Inspector Peter Fiorillo, were transferred to other areas during the investigation.

The concert security guard caught the detectives drinking in the VIP section, sources said. When confronted, the detectives openly declared who they were, but the concert workers thought they were pretending to be police officers and called the police on them.

When police officers called to the VIP section confirmed that the drinking crew were in fact the police on duty, an internal investigation began.

The officers were accused of drunkenness while on duty, as well as stealing a bottle of alcohol.

It is unlikely that the sergeants and the lieutenant were drunk, but they could be charged with failure to supervise, the sources said.

Headliners for the three-day festival included Deadcrow, Lucati and Space Wizard. The Electric Zoo Festival has been held on Randalls Island since 2009.

The Manhattan District Attorney is determining whether the officers will be prosecuted, an NYPD spokesman said.
