Nurses at Northwell Hospital sanction strike

Members of the New York State Nurses Association voted to authorize a strike at South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, New York, part of New Hyde Park, located in New York State.

Voting, which began on January 29 and ended on February 3, does not mean that the strike will take place. Union members still have to notify the hospital 10 days before the start of the strike.

The nurses have been negotiating with the hospital for months, and according to a union press release, their last contract expired on February 28, 2022. NYSNA members argue that negotiations have not progressed as expected.

NYSNA Local President at South Shore University Hospital Criss Blau, RN, said in a union message: “We do not take the strike lightly and many of our members never thought it would come to this. But after months of negotiation, Northwell is still unwilling to listen to the nurses and secure a contract that will help the staff of this hospital safely deliver the care our community deserves. We will return to the negotiating table next week and continue to negotiate in good faith for a fair contract that ensures safe staffing. staff. We don’t want to strike, but we will strike if Northwell leaves us no choice.”

South Shore University Hospital shared the following statement with Becker: The hospital “is aware of the strike vote. We remain optimistic that an agreement can be reached and look forward to positive and productive negotiations next week. came to trust.

The union represents about 800 nurses in the hospital.
