Nurse fired at New York hospital for mistreatment of newborn

Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip, New York, fired a nurse who was rude to a newborn in a video taken by the baby’s father News12 New Jersey.

Members of the child’s family stated that the incident took place on 6 February. In video obtained by a news agency, a person in the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit is seen picking up an infant, turning it over and roughly putting it back into its bassinet. The video was filmed through a small hole in a closed curtain outside the neonatal intensive care unit. The child’s father immediately alerted hospital staff and the nurse was sent home, family members said. News12.

Catholic Health in Rockville Center, New York, which owns the Good Samaritan University Hospital, said the man was fired.

“Upon learning of this incident, prompt and immediate action was taken, including an investigation and therefore the removal of the person involved,” the system said in a statement. News12. “In addition, we have reported this person to the Ministry of Health for further consideration. Ensuring the safety of our patients remains our top priority.”

The child is doing well, the family said.
