Nissan recalls over 800,000 SUVs because key defect could shut down engine

DETROIT. Nissan is recalling more than 809,000 small SUVs in the US and Canada because a problem with the key could cause the ignition to cut out while driving.

The recall applies to select Rogue models from 2014 to 2020 and Rogue Sports from 2017 to 2022.

Nissan says SUVs have folding jackknife keys that may not stay fully open. When driving with a partially folded key, the driver may touch the key fob, inadvertently turning off the engine.

This may result in a loss of engine and brake booster power, and the airbags may not deploy in a collision.

The company states that it is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by this issue.

Nissan hasn’t come up with a solution yet. Owners will be notified in March by an interim letter telling them not to attach anything to the keychain. They will then receive another email asking them to turn in their SUVs for repairs. The automaker says owners of keys that won’t stay open should contact their dealers.
