New York braces for snow that could complicate travel on Tuesday

A rare snowfall in New York this winter could complicate commuting on Tuesday morning, but likely won’t be anything more than a nuisance for the five boroughs, meteorologists said.

The mix of snow, sleet and rain is expected to continue into Tuesday, sending up to six inches of sleet into the city, according to the National Weather Service.

However, it is more likely that 1 to 3 inches is accumulating in the Big Apple due to temperatures hovering around freezing or even staying slightly above the threshold, AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tom Kynes told Daily News.

“The only problem or danger we could have is if some of the colder air around southern New England, the Hudson Valley … gets into the city and it snows longer than expected,” Kynes said.

“It will be a case where a degree or two will make a big difference in the amount of snow. If more snow falls in the city than we expect, it won’t take long.”

New York and Long Island are included in the NWS winter weather advisory, which remains in effect until 1 p.m. Tuesday, but meteorologists expect the Hudson Valley and southern New England to be hit harder by freezing rainfall.

This winter, the city has accumulated only 0.4 inches of snow, and it all fell on February 1st. This set a snowfall record for the last day of winter in New York City and ended the city’s near-record snowless streak of 328 consecutive days. .

“Given the snowless winter, we are not used to snow,” Keens said on Monday. “The first time you drive in the snow, it takes people by surprise. It’s probably more of a nasty storm for us than anything else.

“When I got to the suburbs of northwest Jersey and the Hudson Valley, I probably thought that there would be a mess on the roads. In the city, of course, there may be slippery places, but I think that the roads will probably be wet or slushy. I think the big problems will be in the suburbs.”

Air passengers should brace for a possible flight delay from New York early Tuesday morning, said Kynes, who expects rainfall to become much more frequent by noon.

The winter weather is part of the same storm system that previously hit the West Coast, including Southern California, with snow and rain.
