New pedestrian tunnels to open January 19 in Abilene

Walkable tunnels will have murals depicting storybook dragons in the Storybook Capital of America.

ABILEN, Texas. Pedestrians in Abilene will now have a new way to walk from the Culture District to the Soda District.

At 2:00 pm on January 19, two pedestrian tunnels will be illuminated and open to the public for the first time near T&D Depot.

One tunnel will feature a 3D storybook dragon created by artist Kurt Wenner, allowing for an interactive experience with the piece. In another tunnel, another dragon is depicted.

The tunnels will be lit by the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council and the City of Abilene, and funding was arranged through privatized funding along with a grant from the Texas Arts Commission.

In addition, city manager Robert Hanna, real estate owner and SoDa founder Tim Smith, and the Abilene Chamber of Commerce helped the project.

“As growth continues in both areas, this latest lighting addition should increase visitor enjoyment in the city center and ease access,” said event organizer Lynn Barnett.

The purpose of the coverage is to improve communications, security, and economic growth for Abilene as the official storybook capital of America.
