Nets trade Kyrie Irving to Mavericks

Brooklyn Nets trade Kyrie Irving to Dallas Mavericks, according to multiple outlets including The Associated Press, ESPN and New York Times.

The decision, which was made on Sunday, came two days after the All-Star defenseman reportedly made a trade request.

This marks the end of a four-season tense relationship between the Nets and the 30-year-old. In his first season, he missed dozens of games due to a shoulder injury.

Irving endured several high-profile battles with the Nets, including missing dozens of games due to his refusal to fulfill New York’s mandate to vaccinate athletes. The city later expanded exceptions to its vaccination mandate.

Irving also missed games after being suspended for sharing a link to an antisemitic film on social media.

Irving’s social media post also led Nike to terminate the basketball player’s contract, including delaying the release of the Kyrie 8 signature shoe.

The Mavericks declined to confirm the news to NPR. However, Athletic reported that the Nets had traded Irving for Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, as well as “an unprotected 2029 first-round pick and several future second-round picks.”

Despite playing fewer than 150 games for the Nets, according to ESPN, Irving is still averaging 27.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game this season.
