Neighbors react to suspect’s arrest, talk about day of deadly San Francisco home explosion

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — We learn more about the deadly house explosion and fire that rocked San Francisco’s quiet Outer Sunset neighborhood this week.

One person in the house was found dead, and another resident was arrested for manslaughter, endangering children, and manufacturing drugs.

“It’s a quiet area. The people are pleasant. And in the middle of the street there is a guy who is doing something illegal,” said neighbor Karen Lay.

Lay spoke to ABC7 News from a second-story window of her red-tagged home on 22nd Avenue, which is next door to the house that exploded on Thursday morning.

Police say the house was a drug lab. The suspect, 53-year-old Darron Price, was arrested on Friday.

“This is the right thing to do because it is very destructive – causing property damage and disrupting people’s lives,” Lay said.

“The suspect we arrested, Darron Price, we believe this is his primary residence,” said SFPD officer Robert Rueka.

“He never introduced his family,” neighbor Albert Ng said.

Neighbors say that Price lived in the house with his family. Although the two young children were not at home at the time of the explosion, neighbors say Price’s disabled wife and his caregiver were inside.

Ng said that after the explosion, a distraught, injured paramedic asked him to call 911.

“She ran across the street and told me to help, someone inside,” Ng said.

The body of a woman was later found among the rubble. It was noticed that the rescuers took out tanks and canisters filled with unknown substances from the house.

A powerful explosion rocked the neighborhood, ripping doors off their hinges and shattering windows.

Jerry Kwan was still cleaning up broken glass at his mom’s house five doors down.

“I find it amazing that this could happen in such a quiet residential area,” Kwan said.

Neighbors say they never suspected anything out of the ordinary going on in the house.

“I know people say you lived next door, but I tell you they never invited us to anything. You just don’t know what’s going on in people’s homes,” Lay said.
