Neighbor of San Francisco’s Outer Sunset house bombing recalls suspect smuggling ‘heavy industrial equipment’

SAN FRANCISCO (CGO) — We’re hearing more from neighbors who lived and worked near the Outer Sunset home in San Francisco, which exploded last week, killing one person.

A new home security video shows the moment of a house explosion that rocked the San Francisco area on Thursday. One person was arrested for this on Friday.

It happened in the Sunset Outer District, near 22nd Avenue and Noriega Street.

The explosion caused severe damage to neighboring houses and cars parked in front of the house, such as the white Lexus owned by Erin Gonzalez shown in the ABC7 News SKY7 video on the day of the explosion.

She says that while he is with the police, she considers it a total loss.

“At that moment I thought, thank God, I was not in this car, because, as I said, I had to start work at 9, it happened around 9:15 or 9:30, I am sure that I was not will”. I was in the car at the time, but I’m just happy that I started early that day and that I wasn’t around that car,” Gonzalez said.

Both homes in the neighborhood of the explosion were flagged by fire investigators on Thursday evening.

“My wife called in tears and I could hardly understand what she was saying other than that our house was on fire and was destroyed,” neighbor David Garth said.

Garth, his wife and their 6-year-old daughter lived in the yellow house next door for eight years until it caught fire due to a nearby explosion.

“I am very grateful that we are alive and that we were not in the house, and as for our property, obviously we will have to restore it from scratch,” he said.

The day after the explosion, his neighbor, Darron Price, 53, was arrested after police said a drug lab was operating inside the house that exploded.

He is charged with manslaughter, drug manufacturing and endangering children, as two children who were at the school at the time of the explosion also lived in the house.

Garth says that now, looking back, there were several red flags.

“But if you see your neighbor bringing heavy industrial equipment into their home, you might be surprised,” he said. “We haven’t really thought about it much, people bring big stainless steel sinks and other things or appliances into their homes.”

But as Garth worries about finding other affordable housing in the same area, parents from his wife’s preschool, where she teaches, set up a GoFundMe page to support the family, already raising more than $27,000 in 48 hours.

“Everyone was very, very kind to us,” he said.

Supervisor Joel Engardio plans to hold a meeting at City Hall Wednesday night at 5:00 pm for neighbors affected by this explosion and fire.

City departments will offer information and resources to help these neighbors move forward.
