National Geographic has named the winners of its Photo of the Year competition.

National Geographic has announced the winner of its first Photo of the Year competition.

From a flock of penguins to neon orange lava explosions, thousands of breathtaking photographs were submitted for review.

“Our submissions included a wide range of technologies, from the everyday iPhone to the durable telephoto lens,” said Brynn Birkenbühel, National Geographic senior photo editor and photo competition chief judge.

However, the lucky winner of the grand prize was Dance of the Eagles, directed by Kartik Subramaniam, a San Francisco-based software engineer with a passion for wildlife photography.

Subramaniam told NatGeo that he spent a week near the shore of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Game Reserve in Alaska, waiting for the perfect moment.

According to the magazine, the area gathers the largest concentrations of bald eagles in the world each autumn, with about 3,000 arriving at the start of the salmon.

“Wherever there is salmon, there will be chaos,” Subramaniam said. “Hours of observing their patterns and behavior helped me capture those moments.”

His winning photo was taken as one eagle attempted to steal a log roost with a beautiful view of the coastline from another bird.

Subramaniam’s photo will be featured in an upcoming issue of National Geographic (US Edition) and will receive a six-month digital subscription to the magazine.

Photos of the nine honorable mention winners will be featured on the National Geographic YourShot Instagram account with over 6.5 million followers, and they will also receive a six-month digital subscription to the magazine.
