Memories of San Diego at the Civic Center.

A large, colorful mural greets people walking to Civic Center Plaza from A Street in downtown San Diego. The fresco is called What do you want to remember about our city?

Commissioned in 2020 by the City of San Diego, this public art was created by local artist M. R. (Melinda) Barnadas with input from members of the community. Near the center of the mural is a list of unique memories of San Diego contributed by many.

Today I saw the mural for the first time. I haven’t walked like this in a long time…

What do you want to remember about San Diego…

Someone is walking down the open passage that leads south from A Street to the Civic Center. They pass by a long list of San Diego memories.

People are dancing here at the Civic Center… a city bus… the sea… a little girl was watching a play… fishing on the docks… surfing… Horton Plaza…

…submarines… Hillcrest… tram… Chicano Park… citizenship… ice cream with a friend… lowriders in National City…

…Barrio Logan… Balboa Park… show of solidarity… Charles Lewis III Memorial Park… meeting with John Lewis at Oak Park Library… San Diego Zoo… OB Pier…

…plane-watching at Point Loma… dancing in North Park… Old Town… trips to Tijuana… the best tacos in the world… whale and dolphin watching… palm trees… the lighthouse at Cabrillo…
