Median wages rose in Onondaga County in the third quarter but lagged significantly behind those in New York, USA.

Syracuse, New York. The average weekly wage for Onondaga County workers rose in the third quarter of last year, but the increase was much smaller than other counties in New York and the US, according to new data.

The county had one of the lowest wage growth ratings in the entire country.

The average wage for county workers increased to $1,218 per week in the third quarter, up 5% from the same period in 2021. According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, Onondaga County was ranked 305th among the 355 largest counties in the United States. Onondaga also lagged behind most of New York’s other 17 counties on the list for wage growth. For thirteen of them, the average weekly earnings increased even more.

In just two New York counties, median wages for workers dropped in the third quarter. Wages fell 0.8% in Westchester and 1.8% in Broome. All other New York counties monitored by the bureau saw pay increases.

Like Onondaga, most of New York’s other counties have experienced wage growth that has lagged that of the rest of the US. The nationwide rankings in the state were mostly in the 200s and 300s.

Only one county in the state made the top 100. Wages in Saratoga County rose 11.2% in the third quarter compared to the same period in 2021, ranking the county 15th in wage growth in the U.S.

Nationwide, in the 345 counties tracked by the bureau, median wages increased from the third quarter of 2021 to the third quarter of last year. The national median weekly wage in the third quarter was $1,334, up 6.7% from the previous year.

Midland County in Texas posted the largest percentage increase in average weekly wages of 13.9%. San Mateo County in California experienced the largest decline of 19.6%.
