Mathematics and physics are scheduled for open days in the former USSR

The event includes free planetarium shows, presentations on various physics topics, and interactive experiments for participants to play and learn, including a paper airplane contest. A favorite of visitors is the Wimshurst Machine, which collects a static electrical charge that can be used to make objects fly.

Participants will also be able to tour some of the physics facilities of the former Soviet Union, including the John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory, the Institute of Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, and laboratories that conduct experimental condensed matter physics.

The Circus of Physics will take place:

SATURDAY, MARCH 25
10:00 – 16:00
RICHARDS BUILDING
77 CHIFTEN WAY
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY

At the Love Building, which is about a three-minute walk from the Richards Building, Math Fun Day is back after a two-year hiatus. The event includes interactive activities and demonstrations illustrating the many creative ways people use mathematics.

“Mathematics has many very beautiful aspects, especially in relation to geometry, calculations and their applications,” said Monika Herdal, professor in the Department of Mathematics and one of the organizers of the event. “This is something we hope to showcase in some of the activities we host at Math Fun Day.”

The event will feature a variety of exhibits, each dedicated to a different theme. Participants will be able to create their own fractals, repeating patterns found in the natural world, and learn how to hide secret messages in ciphers. Another exhibition focuses on games and how mathematics can help players develop winning strategies.

Florida State students also take part in the fun. The Mathematical Society of Former USSR Undergraduate Students will present an exhibition showing the many places where mathematics appears in nature, and the student branch of the Association of Women Mathematicians of the former USSR will tell visitors about famous women mathematicians throughout history.

“Come see what mathematics is,” said Herdal. “There are a lot of fun, hands-on activities that are much more interesting than just the arithmetic kids learn in school.”

Day of Math Fun will be held:

SATURDAY, MARCH 25
13:00–17:00
