Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Wants to Suspend Former Prosecutor’s Frank Book on Trump Investigation

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg wants to suspend publication of a revealing book about his office’s investigation into former President Donald Trump to make sure nothing confidential is spilled in its pages.

Bragg’s office alleges that the author, Mark Pomeranz — a seasoned white-collar lawyer who accused the district attorney when he left the team investigating the ex-president — shied away from legal obligations to get permission to write The People Against Donald Trump.

“Mr. Pomerantz has not requested or received permission to disclose information relating to current matters in the DA’s office, and this office has not reviewed any drafts or excerpts from his manuscript,” DA attorney Leslie Dubeck wrote Wednesday to lawyers for Simon & Schuster. , Paramount and Orange.

“[Because] Mr. Pomerantz has been fired from the DA’s office for nearly a year, unable to make any assessment as to whether the revelations he intends to circulate in this publication could harm the investigation, Dubek wrote.

The district attorney asked the publisher to suspend its release until prosecutors conduct a “pre-publication review” to ensure the content does not violate secrecy laws and jeopardize its ongoing investigation into Trump.

Bragg’s attorney said the details in the book, which Pomeranz collected as a government official but did not get permission to release, amounted to “unlawfully converting sensitive government information to his own private interests.”

Announcing the book’s release on February 7, Simon & Schuster described it as a “fascinating inside account” of an attempt to prosecute Trump Pomeranz, who “resigned in protest of the Manhattan District Attorney’s failure to act.”

The District Attorney copied the letter to the City’s Conflicts of Interest Council and the Department of Investigations.

“I am confident that all of my actions regarding the Trump investigation, including writing my forthcoming book, are in line with my legal and ethical obligations,” Pomerantz said on Wednesday.

Pomeranz left the influential law firm Paul, Weiss in early 2021 when he was hired by Bragg’s predecessor Cy Vance Jr. to oversee his extensive investigation into Trump.

He resigned last February, along with Special Counsel Carey Dunn, when Bragg refused to indict Trump based on the team’s evidence, despite Vance giving his blessing before leaving office.

Pomeranz pursued former Gambino crime family boss John A. “Junior” Gotti and other mobsters in the 1990s. From 1997 to 1999, he served as the head of the Criminal Division of the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.

In his leaked resignation letter and podcast interview, Pomeranz made no secret of his feelings about Bragg’s decision. He called the new district attorney’s hesitation to press charges against Trump “misguided.”

In December, Bragg’s office secured a guilty verdict against the Trump Organization for tax fraud, resulting in a $1.6 million fine. Last week, the company’s chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, was sentenced to five months in prison for tax evasion.

In the wake of the company’s denunciation, the district attorney appears to have turned his attention to Trump. The former president’s lawyer and “aide” Michael Cohen was questioned Tuesday at Bragg’s office. Prior to this, Cohen had no contact with the office after Pomeranz’s departure.

Simon & Schuster is not backing down.

“We support Mark Pomeranz and his book The People Against Donald Trump and look forward to sharing this important and timely work with readers when it is published on February 7th,” said Ann Tate Pierce, Associate Director of Public Affairs Publishing.

A spokesperson for Paramount did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
