Man shot dead by police in downtown Oxnard

Authorities said the man was shot and killed by an Oxnard police officer around 6 a.m. Sunday in downtown Oxnard.

The Oxnard Police Department closed off sections of Fourth Street between A and B Streets to investigate the shooting. Drivers have been advised to avoid the area. The shooting took place on Fourth Street, authorities said.

Commander Louis McArthur said the injured man was alive when he was taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center, but no further information was available.

MacArthur said he did not know what led to the interaction between the officer and the victim. It was not clear if the victim had a weapon.

By 11:30 a.m., the commander reported that the officer had initiated contact with the casualty. He couldn’t tell if more than one officer had used the weapon. He did not have any additional information about the state of the executed.

The affected downtown area was still closed to traffic until noon, but MacArthur said the closure would be lifted soon.
