Man sentenced to over 16 years in prison for importing fentanyl pills

A Riverside County man convicted of importing more than 80 pounds of counterfeit fentanyl pills into the US was sentenced in a San Diego federal court on Monday to more than 16 years in prison.

Moises Moreno, 38, of Moreno Valley, was found guilty by a jury of attempting to smuggle pills inside his pickup truck at the San Ysidro port of entry on June 6, 2021.

The US Attorney’s Office said the pills were in 35 packages that were hidden inside a suspended ceiling on the truck’s roof.

Moreno denied knowing the drugs were in his truck after his arrest, prosecutors said, but bragged about the smuggling attempt in a series of recorded calls from prison.

On Monday, he was sentenced to 200 months in prison.
