Man in critical condition after driving his electric scooter into a pothole in the Sorrento Valley

A 60-year-old man is in critical condition after crashing his electric scooter in the Sorrento Valley on Friday night.

The man was not wearing a helmet when he drove his scooter into a pothole on Rozell Street near the entrance to Interstate 5 South at around 5:45 p.m., according to an SDPD sergeant who was present at the scene. According to the sergeant, the pothole was about 15 by 30 inches wide and 3 inches deep.

Bystanders found the man on the ground, unconscious and not breathing, about seven feet from the pothole, and gave him CPR until paramedics arrived. Medics checked the man’s pulse before taking him to Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was in critical condition as of 9 p.m., according to the SDPD.

The police did not identify the rider, but said he was from Oceanside.

An employee at a repair shop near Miramar Road said the business was busy following the recent storm, according to NBC 7’s Dana Williams.

Countless potholes formed across the county after severe storms in January. Earlier this week, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria dispatched a 150-man crew to fix potholes across the city. On Friday, the city said more than 1,600 pothole reports remained on the Get It Done app, adding that they typically receive about 200 requests a day.

Gloria has to take care of the maintenance work done so far on Saturday morning at Linda Vista.
