‘Looking forward to making amends’: Padre Tatis Jr on his suspension and San Diego fence repairs

Fernando Tatis Jr. quickly became a Padres fan favorite for his style, San Diego devotion and otherworldly talent. He then missed all of 2022 due to a avoidable wrist injury (he got it on a motorcycle) and a steroid suspension.

On Saturday at Padres FanFest, Tatis Jr. was set to return to the Loyal Monks for the first time since his losing season. Even he admitted that he was nervous about the kind of reception he would get.

“Of course. Of course, yes,” Tatis Jr. said early Friday morning. “But I feel like it’s good vibes, those butterflies, when you go on a first date. I feel like that’s it.”

Fernando got the answer as he walked down the corridor towards the crowded hall, and the crowd immediately began chanting his name. While not everything can be forgotten, it’s clear that San Diego baseball fans have forgiven.

“It just makes me insist. They have been there since day one. I listened to them as they talked and I feel like everything that needed to be posted is already there. I feel like I’m back on the pitch from now on sharing the same love.”

He was surrounded at every turn by a crowd of fans who cheered for the return of one of the most dynamic and charismatic players the game has ever seen. Fernando repented again.

“I learned a lot,” Tatis Jr. says. “I feel that everything that has happened to me had a purpose for us as we strive for the future. Look forward to. I’ve already learned my lesson from what happened and I’m really looking forward to making amends and having a great comeback.”

Having to watch the Padres run to the National League Championship Series knowing that he may have been the deciding factor in that 5-game loss to the Phillies is hard. But he uses it as motivation.

“It gave me a lot of fuel, trust me. I don’t want to put too many words into it. I want to prove myself on the field, just get back on the field with my guys. I definitely miss that fire when I was with them in the jungle. It was definitely a dagger to my heart and now I’m looking forward to being on the front lines.”

Tatis Jr. has reconciled with his teammates, who welcome his return with open arms.

It’s also not compulsory. He took this step in an attempt to get over it and put it behind him and just kind of change the perception of him there,” says Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove, one of the most respected voices at the club. “It won’t be easy, that’s what he’s going to face this season and maybe the next couple of years. But one of the things we talked about very early on was that at some point you have to forgive yourself and try to get past it and show everyone who you really are and what’s inside. It’s very easy to walk around and feel that you must have a certain sense of remorse, or you must show everyone how bad you feel about what you’ve done. I think he already did that and he showed everyone what he is and what he’s going to do to fix it.”

So, Fernando Tatis Jr. improved his relationship with fans and teammates. He also had his shoulder and wrist fixed surgically and says he’s ready for any baseball activity. It remains only to deal with the fans-opponents, who will certainly try to get into the superstar’s head.

“I’m definitely looking forward to this challenge,” says Tatis Jr. – It will be fun. I think this will be one of the most emotional years of my career. I want to accept it and see what happens next.”

If this is anything like what we’ve seen in his first three major league seasons, he’s got an MVP-level performance ahead of him and another deep Padres playoff run.
