Lifeguard Luke Shepardson wins Super Bowl of Surfing in Hawaii

Luke Shepardson has been announced as the winner of one of the most prestigious and legendary surf events in the world, held for the first time in seven years in Hawaii over the weekend.

Shepardson was announced as the winner of Sunday’s The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational, while John John Florence – the winner of the event in 2016, most recently – came in second. Shepardson, a lifeguard from Honolulu’s Ocean Safety, scored 89.1 out of 90, beating defending champion Florence, according to the Star-Advertiser.

Mark Healy finished third and Billy Kemper fourth.

The competition featured female surfers for the first time in its 39-year history, and six people competed.

Andrea Moller made history as the first woman to ride the competitive wave at The Eddie, according to the paper.

The one-day competition, held in Waimea Bay on Oahu’s north shore, is only held when the surf gets strong enough during the winter big wave surfing season from mid-December to mid-March.

Until this year, it has only been held nine times since the first competition in 1984.

The competition honors Native Hawaiian legend Eddie Aikau for his dedication, courage and dedication.
