Learn more about your kidneys and how to keep them healthy

Sanford Fit and Sanford PROMISE have teamed up to bring you an amazing new video tutorial on the science behind healthy choices and your kidneys.

Why kidneys?

The kidneys are one of the many organs that are critical to maintaining your health, and you probably have two. They not only filter the blood, but also maintain the correct balance of water and nutrients in the body.

“The kidneys get rid of waste products and maintain our blood composition to provide an ideal internal environment for all of our organs,” said Dr. Kameswaran Surendran, postdoctoral fellow at Sanford Research.

Kidney Research at Sanford

Dr. Surendran leads pioneering kidney research at Sanford Research in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His lab team is dedicated to studying different types of kidney cells and the role of genetics in the proper functioning of the kidneys. His lab is currently investigating how genetics influence the ability of the kidneys to respond to certain types of diets.

“We hope we can identify eating habits that are less taxing on our kidneys to keep our kidneys and our bodies healthy,” he said.

One of the many interesting things to understand about the kidneys is how they filter the blood. The kidneys remove waste from the blood, preserving the contents necessary for the normal functioning of the body. Most of the blood content is initially filtered out and flows through the tube to the bladder.

Before the fluid leaves the kidneys, the kidney cells take up the parts that the body still needs and return them to the bloodstream.

“It would be like if we decided to clean up our houses, first throwing most of our belongings along with the garbage into a long and winding garbage chute, and when everything fell into the chute, our family members stood along the chute to actively grab the garbage. . take back everything we still value before it’s too late.”

How to keep your kidneys healthy

Now that you know how wonderful kidneys are, you can take steps to keep your kidneys healthy by making the right choices.

Being active, choosing healthy foods, and drinking plenty of water are great choices you can make to keep your kidneys and body healthy.

Hydrating the kidneys is very important. Thirst, nausea, headaches and even tiredness can be signs that you are not getting enough water.

Kidney video

This video is about three things:

  1. A hands-on experiment you can do at home or in the classroom
  2. An easy to understand explanation of how the kidney works
  3. Interesting facts about the kidneys from a scientist from Sanford Research

Printouts of kidney lessons

Use printables to guide you through the lesson and decorate your space with helpful messages.

  • Coloring sheets: These sheets show different aspects of kidney function. Sheet 1 includes the excretory system, including the kidneys, ureters, and bladder. Sheet 2 is a transverse section of a kidney. Sheet 3 represents the nephron and collecting duct.
  • Compare and Contrast: This worksheet is used to help students learn about similarities and differences. You can compare and contrast the excretory system and the digestive system, or your filter and the real kidney.
  • Kidney Experiment: This document will help you understand the practical steps shown in the video. This is just a starter guide – feel free to let the kids get creative and experiment in their own way.
  • Scientific Method: This document allows students to be scientists by following the same procedure as researchers. This can be used to build an experiment from a video and can be used for any question a student might ask.
  • Dictionary page: Vocabulary terms included in this document are used in the video. Primary and intercalated cells are specific cells studied by Dr. Surendran at Sanford Research.
  • Healthy Lifestyle Posters: Decorate your space and inspire kids to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Sanford PROMISE is committed to inspiring the next generation of scientists and raising awareness of the benefits of research. Together, Sanford Fit and Sanford PROMISE are at the forefront of Sanford Health’s work with young people.
