Kennedy Airport jet evacuated after laptop computer catches fire on JetBlue flight from Barbados

A smoking laptop computer forced passengers to the escape slides Saturday on a JetBlue plane that had just arrived from Barbados, officials said.

The flight crew aboard JetBlue Flight 662 reported the smoking laptop in the cabin shortly after landing, said the Federal Aviation Administration.

Port Authority first responders and the flight’s crew worked to evacuate 167 people from the Airbus A320 jet via the emergency slide system, said the Fire Department.

Five passengers suffered minor injuries.

The evacuation took place at Terminal 5, where JetBlue is based at Kennedy.

Laptop computer batteries have been known to catch fire.

The flight from Bridgetown, Barbados arrived at the gate at 8:53 p.m., nearly 1 1/2 hours behind schedule, according to the FlightAware plane tracking website.
