Keller solves traffic and construction problems in connection with the Old Town project

City of Keller is addressing traffic and safety concerns over an ongoing road project.

About four months ago, the reconstruction of the project began, which will connect the eastern and western parts of the Old City. This requires work on US 377 or Main Street, which includes a new median and pedestrian-activated traffic lights.

Keller public works director Alonso Linan said the project is expected to be completed around July, with work on the 377 in February.

Residents have recently raised concerns about how far the median curb goes into the traffic lane.

Gillian Beasley owns Inspired Wings Fashion on Main Street in Keller and said she nearly hit the road earlier this week.

“Fortunately, there was no one around me,” Beasley said. “I kind of freaked out. I’m 8 months pregnant so I thought, “Ah!”

“When all the cars fall in a smaller place, you can probably reach out and touch the car next to you,” said Robb Williamson, who had the same problem. “You either slow down to let go of someone else, so there’s a gap that makes everyone else angry.”

As a temporary solution, the city has placed traffic cones on the new median to keep drivers vigilant. The city is working with the contractor on a long-term solution, Linan said. Crews working on Thursday removed and re-marked the pavement.

“So you go from a 12-foot lane, and then you go over the next 600 feet to an 11-foot lane,” he said. “So the average driver, if he doesn’t hear this interview, won’t notice the difference.”

Linan added that the area is still considered a construction zone. Drivers are urged to slow down.

“When it’s done, it will look great. We are moving towards a good median. We’re going to well-groomed lands. We will have a new pedestrian crossing with signaling,” he said.

Business owners such as Beasley have said they are confident in the final product and are trying to be patient.

“I think the result when everything is ready and finished will be amazing, but the last few months have been a bit tough,” she said.
