Katy ISD students will no longer be able to access Twitter over the district’s Wi-Fi.

The change came after the district stated that students could access inappropriate websites through Twitter.

KATHY, Texas. Beginning Friday at 5:00 pm, Katy ISD students will no longer be able to access Twitter through the community Wi-Fi.

The change came after concerns were brought to the district’s attention that students could access inappropriate websites via Twitter over the district’s “BeTheLegacy” Wi-Fi, Cathy ISD said.

Cathy ISD has already made Instagram and TikTok inaccessible to students for the same reason.

Information about how employees can access Twitter will be shared with employees.

“Katy ISD is committed to providing a safe learning environment for all students, both in the classroom and online. Recently, a security issue with the social media application Twitter was brought to the attention of the school district. The issue concerns the ability of students to access inappropriate websites through the district’s BeTheLegacy Wi-Fi app.

Internet content in all Katy ISD classes is filtered using adult content filters to ensure compliance with the Children’s Online Protection Act (CIPA). The District also regularly evaluates filtering methods to review sites. However, the county’s filtering system does not have the ability to filter website links hosted through third-party applications such as Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, etc.

As a result, from Friday, January 27, at 17:00, Twitter will no longer be available to students while they are in the school district. BeTheLegacy Wi-Fi. Sites like Tik Tok and Instagram are no longer accessible to students over Wi-Fi. However, district staff will still have access to the Twitter platforms via Wi-Fi. More information about employee access to Twitter will be shared with employees this Friday.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work together to create a safe and secure learning environment for all students.”
