Is new Bills RB Nyheim Hines crazy? His punt return mantra says it all

The Buffalo Bills added a dynamic playmaker to their offense and special teams on Tuesday when they acquired Nyheim Hines from the Indianapolis Colts for Zack Moss and a conditional sixth round pick in 2023.

Hines, 25, is under contract through 2024 so acquiring the back is also part of the team’s long-term vision for the roster.

In his career, Hines has 1,205 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on 300 carries (4.0 YPC), but he’s also a threat to catch the ball. Since entering the league in 2018, Hines has 235 receptions for 1,725 yards and seven touchdowns. Of his 235 receptions, 91 have gone for first downs.

Where Hines could make his biggest impact, however, is as a punt returner. It’s something that Hines has done all of his life and he will be the first to tell you that it takes a certain level of crazy to be a punt returner in the NFL.

To get himself psyched up everytime that he returns a punt, Hines says the same message to himself.

“Before I go back there, I say, ‘I don’t care about my life.’ Every time,” Hines told the media in 2021 when asked if it took a certain type of crazy to be a return man.

That’s certainly one way to go about things.

Hines elaborated that not everyone is made out to be a returner and it takes a special type of toughness to survive as a return man.

“Every time. Before the ball is kicked I say that,” Hines added. “I say it’s something you have or you don’t have. Like, I’ve been doing punt returns my whole life. I haven’t seen guys randomly start and continue it. It takes a special person to look up in the air while all the other people are looking to rip your head off.”

In 2019, Hines had two punt return touchdowns with the Colts on just nine returns. He finished with a ridiculous 31.2 yard per return average that season. Hines has not found the end zone since that year as a punt returner, but he recorded 300 punt return yards the next season and is currently averaging 10.1 yards per punt return.

Based on his mantra, there is no doubt that Hines is going to give the Bills everything he has as a punt returner and running back.
