February 16, San Francisco. A large banner read: “Release Mumiy Abu Jama, he is innocent and framed.” Another said: “For the actions of the workers to free Mumiya Abu Jamal, Tyre Nichols, George Floyd – it never stops.”
They gathered at the headquarters of local union 10 near Fisherman’s Wharf and then marched down the Embarcadero to the square to hold a rally in front of the Ferry Building, a site named after union hero Harry Bridges. The ILWU study group, a symbol of union militancy and solidarity, led and set the pace for the march. ILWU members on motorcycles directed the surrounding traffic.
Among the speakers, ILWU President Trent Willis stressed that there are no political prisoners in a democracy. However, journalist and writer Mumiya Abu-Jamal has been imprisoned for the past forty years in what many consider a corrupt and racist trial.
However, in the long struggle for his release, there have been some developments. Philadelphia District Court Judge Lucretia Clemons ordered the district attorney to open newly discovered evidence boxes for the defense. She plans to rule on Mummy’s request for a new trial.
