HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card Launching in Australia

In May of 2022, CEO Jeffrey Goh revealed that a Star Alliance co-branded credit card would launch in late 2022. This card would earn miles transferrable to all 26 airline partners.

It was also revealed that the card would be first tested in only one country, and the expanded from there if successful. Now we have learned that Australia will be the testing ground.

This new product is called the “HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card”, based on details that were briefly share on Singapore Airlines’ website and reported by Mainly Miles. All details were also revealed, although the card is not available for applications yet.

Here’s some of the most important details about this card:

  • AU$450 annual fee ($290 USD), waived for the first 12 months
  • KrisFlyer Elite Gold status (Star Alliance Gold status) when you spend $4,000 the first year, and when you spend $60,000 in subsequent years.
  • Earn 1 Star Alliance Point for every AU$1 spent on eligible purchases, up to AU$3,000 per statement period.
  • Earn 0.5 Star Alliance Points per AU$1 spent on eligible purchases thereafter.
  • Nominate the airline you want your miles to be deposited with after each billing cycle
  • 0% interest for 6 months on flight bookings made directly through participating Star Alliance Member Airlines website using your HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card.

Conclusion

The Star Alliance has revealed the details of its first credit card, which will be available only in Australia. The card will earn rewards that can be transferred to any of the 26 member programs.

However it looks like you won’t be able to just earn general Star Alliance points. You have to nominate your favorite airline, and that’s where points will be deposited.

The card comes with the equivalent of a $290 annual fee which is waived the first year. Earning rates are terrible, but that’s usually the case with most countries where interchange fees are lower than in the U.S.

Let’s see if this HSBC Star Alliance Credit Card is successful and if it find its way to the United States soon.
