How to be prepared to drive in winter weather

As of Tuesday evening, forecasters are expecting more freezing rain and sleet to worsen road conditions. TxDOT says drivers should delay travel and stay off the road. If you need to drive, TxDOT recommends carrying an emergency kit.

It should include snacks, water, a shovel, and something that creates a slight grip, such as sand or cat litter. Take extra socks, gloves, and a blanket with you in case you can’t keep the car running and you don’t have heating. Add jumper cables, an ice scraper, and a first aid kit.

The AAA also recommends that drivers carry a basic tool kit and a car charger. Make sure your tire tread is not too worn for slippery roads. You can read AAA tips here.

Here’s information on how to scrape ice off car windows, including a recipe for homemade de-icing solution if you find you don’t have an ice scraper. AAA says you can’t use hot water to melt ice. This may cause the glass to break.

During a winter storm last February, NBC 5 rode alongside the Tarrant County Sheriff’s courtesy patrol. The group seeks out drivers in need of assistance in all conditions and has been especially welcome to drivers stranded in winter weather.

If you need emergency assistance, call 911. The Texas Department of Public Safety also has a stranded motorist hotline at 800-525-5555.
