How can the symptoms of a heart attack differ in men and women

In women, the more common symptoms of a heart attack are abdominal pain, heartburn, confusion, dizziness, and fatigue.

HOUSTON, Texas. Many people wore red on Friday in support of the American Heart Association’s annual “Red for Women” day. It is designed to raise awareness about women’s heart health and heart disease, which is the leading cause of death among women.

But what we’ve learned about heart attack symptoms may not be the same for women as it is for men.

Chest pain, nausea, and shortness of breath have become synonymous with heart attack symptoms, but these symptoms are actually more common in men.

In women, the symptoms can be completely different.

Symptoms in men include constricting chest pain, pain in the shoulders and arms, restlessness, nausea, weakness, and shortness of breath.

But in women, the more common symptoms of a heart attack are stomach pain, heartburn, confusion, dizziness, and fatigue.

Cardiologist and memorial doctor Hermann Ross Braun says symptoms in women can be atypical and sometimes vague. Even just a feeling that something is wrong.

“Sometimes we say just a sense of impending doom and an unsettling feeling,” Dr. Brown said.

This can make a heart attack harder to diagnose.

“Unfortunately, this leads to delays in care, delays in diagnosis, when time is really of the essence,” Dr. Brown said.

So he says knowing your body and knowing these symptoms can help you know when something is wrong.

“Know your history, know your family history, know your numbers, know your cholesterol levels, your blood pressure, and do what you can to minimize your risk,” Dr. Brown said.

He says a healthy lifestyle, a healthy diet, and not smoking are all ways to minimize risk.
