Houston lawyer killed after confrontation with homeowners over truck in Smith County, deputies say

Mark Correro was shot dead after he ran into a man and woman at their home in Smith County and told them their truck was his, deputies said.

TYLER, Texas. A Houston lawyer who was shot and killed in a home invasion in Smith County, Texas over the weekend was suffering from a mental breakdown at the time, authorities say.

Mark Anthony Correro, 50, entered a home in Treasure Bay, east of Bullard, Texas, around 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning and confronted the homeowners, according to Smith County Sheriff’s Office officials. He said that their truck belonged to him, according to investigators.

The homeowners said they were able to kick Correro out of the house and lock the door, but he continued to scream, claiming their truck was his.

Before helpers arrived, the homeowner said he took the shotgun outside when he went to check on his truck. That’s when he said that Correro was back on the property and kept claiming the truck was his. According to deputies, the landlord told Correro to sit down and said it looked like he was having a mental attack because he kept saying the unknown woman’s name.

During this skirmish, the homeowner’s fiancée came out into the street, which investigators said further angered Correro. It was then, according to them, that Correro began to approach them, threatening.

After warning Correro several times that he would shoot, investigators said, Correro lunged at them and the landlord fired once, hitting him in the chest.

When the first responders arrived there, they found Correro in the courtyard of the house. They started CPR, but he died.

Deputies said the truck did not belong to Correro and it is still unclear why exactly it ran into the homeowners. Deputies said there was no known connection between the landlords and Correro.

The homeowner who shot Correro was not charged.
