Hochul wants New York’s minimum wage to rise to keep pace with inflation

New York Governor Katie Hochul today proposed an annual increase in the state’s minimum wage, which would be tied to inflation.

Hochul unveiled her proposal on her 2023 State address in Albany.

The governor said New York’s nearly 900,000 minimum wage workers were hardest hit by inflation, which surged at its fastest rate in 40 years last year.

“The average monthly cost of goods and energy for low-income households has jumped more than 13% in just two years,” Hochul said. “It pushes marginalized families to the limit. Therefore, on the basis of fairness and social justice, I propose a plan to link the minimum wage to inflation.”

Hochul received applause from state legislators after the proposal was made.

The Governor promised to include “caps” on the pay rise that would “make increases predictable for employers and create flexibility in the event of a recession.”

She noted that minimum wage workers were most often women and people of color and, in many cases, single mothers.

Over the past seven years, New York State has steadily raised the state’s minimum wage in stages.

minimum wage in upstate New York and areas outside of New York increased on December 31 from $13.20 an hour to $14.20 an hour.

The 7.5% increase means that a person working full-time in a minimum wage job will be paid an additional $40 per week.

Fast food workers have been singled out as a separate category and are now paid at least $15 an hour across the state.
