Historic red telephone box in upstate New York has a new home

Watkins Glen’s iconic red English style telephone booth in downtown Watkins Glen is in a new location across the street.

A phone booth that has stood outside the Rooster Fish Brewing Pub for 31 years was moved to the Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce earlier this month.

According to WETM, the phone booth was sold after the original pub closed and began selling assets. The Chamber of Commerce bought the kiosk to preserve this part of the village’s history.

The crew moved the kiosk to a new location on the morning of 9 February, the day before the pub’s grand re-opening.

WETM reports that an eight-foot telephone box was found in a warehouse in Buffalo by Doug Thayer, but was originally built in England in the 1940s.

Watkins Glen isn’t the only place in upstate New York that has a British phone booth. In the Catskills, a red booth stands in the middle of a farm about twenty minutes from Bellaire Ski Mountain in New Kingston, New York, according to an unused New York City.

The Capital District also has an English booth in a pub in downtown Albany. The Olde English Pub has a big red telephone booth right outside the front door.
