“He was just opening presents with his son” | Father hit and killed steps away from son’s birthday party in Pasadena

A 6-year-old’s birthday celebration took a tragic turn last weekend when the child’s father died in a car accident.

PASADENA, Texas. Police said a runaway driver killed a man in Pasadena who was celebrating his son’s 6th birthday by crossing the street on Saturday.

Giovanni Castillo, 24, was hit by a car around 5:30 p.m. on January 28 on Watters Road near Fairmont Parkway. He died shortly after the incident.

His sister Cristina Castillo said that she still cannot recover from the death of her younger brother.

“He was just opening presents with his son,” Cristina Castillo said. “And then, now he’s gone.

Cristina Castillo said her brother and his family were celebrating at their apartment when he took a short break to go to the nearest ATM. Pasadena police said that on the way home in front of his apartment, a GMC truck driver hit Giovanni Castillo and then drove away. A neighbor found him and called for help.

“She recognized the shirt and said she just started screaming out my mom’s name,” said Cristina Castillo.

Giovanni Castillo was still alive, but she died a few minutes after the police arrived.

“I could not believe it. I was waiting for someone to call me later that night and say that he was in the hospital or that he was all right, ”said Cristina Castillo.

Pasadena Police have identified the latest GMC Sierra with large towing mirrors and chrome trim as a vehicle of interest in the Giovonni case. It turned out that it had a lift kit installed, big tires with dark rims, a bedspread and no front license plate.

“The guy who could have stopped could have done something to help or at least apologize to my brother,” Cristina Castillo said.

Cristina Castillo has said that in addition to being funny, kind and thoughtful, one of her brother’s greatest legacies will be his role as a father. He took this responsibility seriously, as his father died when he was young.

“He didn’t have the opportunity to have a father to raise him, so he always wanted to make sure his son knew he was loved,” said Cristina Castillo.

The family expressed hope that the driver who left the scene would change his mind and come forward.

“I wish they knew that my brother was a man with a name, with a history, with a family that loved him, that really wanted him to grow old. And to please, please surrender yourself,” Cristina Castillo said. “If it was an accident, it’s all right, but please turn yourself in because my family deserves justice. His son deserves justice.”

Giovonni’s funeral will take place Monday, February 6, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at J. Leal Funeral Home in South Houston.
