Habitat for Humanity reflects on the contributions of former President Jimmy Carter

It has been nearly a decade since former President Jimmy Carter came to North Texas to build homes with Habitat for Humanity volunteers in Fort Worth and Dallas.

However, Trinity Habitat for Humanity CEO Gage Yeager remembers the week well.

“He appears on the bow at 89 years old, no remarks. I just thought how electrifying the atmosphere was in that room when he showed up to do it,” Yeager said.

This 2014 visit was for Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s work project, an annual event that ran until 2020.

Over the years, the Carters have brandished hammers with more than 104,000 volunteers in the US and 14 countries, helping build and renovate nearly 4,400 homes.

Through his work with the organization, which began shortly after he left the Oval Office, Yeager said the former president helped move Habitat for Humanity to where it is today.

“Presidential power is a wonderful thing to grab hold of,” he said.

And because of their shared values, Yeager says Carter will remain an indelible seal on the organization long after he’s gone.

“Love thy neighbour. That’s what Jimmy Carter was talking about, right? Yeager said.
