GRIDLOCK SAM: Prince Harry and Meghan visit during peak holiday traffic

Sunday, Dec. 4 – Saturday, Dec. 10

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED THURSDAY, IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Watch for a traffic jam on Tuesday evening in Midtown as Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, will receive the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Award. A who’s who of celebrities will join them. Avoid the area around the Hilton Hotel at 6th Ave. and 54th St. from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. as paparazzi, news crews and onlookers tie up traffic. The big traffic question is, “Will the royals take a stroll to see the Rockefeller Center Tree?” Stay tuned to @gridlocksam for updates.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, speak during the Global Citizen festival, Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021, in New York.

REMINDER: Sunday the city will close 5th Ave. to cars and open it up to pedestrians from noon to 6 p.m. between 49th St. and 57th St. This will continue for the following two Sundays. 5th Ave. buses will be rerouted to Lexington Ave.

The Giants host the Commanders Sunday at 1 p.m. The Hudson River crossings will be slow going. Take the NJT shuttle from Secaucus instead.

The city has declared Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday GRIDLOCK ALERT DAYS! I’d add Friday to the mix. Traffic in Manhattan will be especially bad along 5th Ave. in the 40s and 50s around Rockefeller Center and in the Times Square area.

At Madison Square Garden, the Blues face the Rangers on Monday at 7 p.m. On Tuesday at 7 p.m., Illinois takes on Texas and Iowa plays Duke in the Jimmy V basketball classic. The Hawks fly into town to battle the Knicks, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Nets host the Hornets at Barclays, Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Monday to Friday for the next two weeks, the Hutchinson River Parkway will be fully shut southbound around Westchester Ave. from midnight to 4 a.m. Take Exit 2: Westchester Ave./E. Tremont Ave., turn left onto Waters Place, and continue to Westchester Ave. to reenter the Parkway.

MAILBAG

Dear Gridlock Sam,

Every weekend 18-wheeler trucks illegally park along the 12th Ave. access road southbound between 58th St. and 54th St. in Manhattan. Many are idling continuously, and this is adjacent to Hudson River Park. Why is there no enforcement from NYPD?

Adam

Dear Adam,

I’ve alerted NYPD to the situation; particularly egregious since it’s next to a park. Let me know if you don’t see an improvement.

As a reminder, you can report idling vehicles to the DEP’s Citizen Air Complaint Program and earn a cut of the fine in the process. Check out the DEP website under Environment>Transportation Emissions.
