GRIDLOCK SAM: Marathon traffic and Daylight Saving Time dangers

Sunday, Nov. 6 – Saturday, Nov. 12

ALTERNATE SIDE PARKING RULES ARE SUSPENDED TUESDAY, ELECTION DAY, AND FRIDAY, VETERANS DAY

REMINDER: Sunday is Marathon Day! 50,000 people will start their run from Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island between 8 and 11 a.m. They’ll proceed over the Verrazzano Bridge, through Bay Ridge, up Fourth Ave. to Lafayette Ave., through South Williamsburg via Bedford Ave., and then on a route closely paralleling the Brooklyn-Queens waterfront over the Pulaski Bridge to the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge. Once in Manhattan, they’ll head straight up First Ave., over the Willis Ave. Bridge to the Bronx, loop around Mott Haven, take the Madison Ave. Bridge back to Manhattan, and then proceed down Fifth Ave. to 90th St. The last few miles of the course are mostly in Central Park, except for a stretch on Central Park South just before the finish line.

Runners cross the Verrazano Bridge during the New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018.

Adding to the traffic troubles, the Jets host the Bills at the Meadowlands at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Hudson River crossings will be slow-going; take the NJT shuttle from Secaucus instead.

President Biden will be in Yonkers for a rally Sunday at 5 p.m. Watch for possible impacts to the Saw Mill Parkway, Cross County Parkway, the New York State Thruway, and on the West Side.

SAFETY ALERT: Daylight Saving Time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Crash rates go up the week after the change due to disrupted sleep patterns. The evening rush will become more hazardous now that it takes place in darkness. Drive carefully.

Tuesday is Election Day. Watch for extra activity outside polling places, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

BASKETBALL SUBWAY SERIES! The Nets host the Knicks at Barclays, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Rangers host the Islanders, Tuesday at 7 p.m.

At Madison Square Garden, the 1975 play Monday at 7 p.m., and Jo Koy takes to the stage Thursday at 8 p.m.

MAILBAG

Dear Gridlock Sam,

I’m heading to New Brunswick, N.J. from East End Ave. around 10:30 a.m. on Marathon Day. How should I get out of the city?

M

Dear M,

The lead runners should come over the Queensboro and head north onto First Ave. right around the time you want to leave. With First Ave. closed from 63rd St. up to the Willis Ave. Bridge, your best bet will be taking East End Ave. to 79th St., turning left, then a quick right to hop on the southbound FDR Drive. From there, exit at 34th St. and cut across town to the Lincoln Tunnel. The football game at the Meadowlands will slow your approach to the NJ Turnpike and down to Exit 9 for Rutgers University, allow for extra time.
