Georgia offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiter killed in car crash

ATHENS, Georgia — Georgia football player Devin Willock and a human resources officer were killed in a car crash in Athens early Sunday morning, the university said in a statement.

Willock, a redshirt sophomore from New Milford, New Jersey, started two games on offense last season. Recruitment officer Chandler LeCroy was also killed, according to the university.

“The entire Georgia family is devastated by the tragic loss of football student Devin Willock and football club employee Chandler LeCroy,” the university said in a statement. “Two more participants of the football program were injured in the accident. Both are in stable condition and we will continue to monitor their condition with medical staff.

“Devin and Chandler were two very special people who meant so much to the University of Georgia, our football program, and our athletic department. We ask everyone to pray for their families during this very difficult time.”

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Bulldogs senior linebacker Nolan Smith reacted to the news on Twitter.

The Athens-Clark County Police said in a statement that the one-vehicle accident occurred around 2:45 am ET Sunday. Police said an initial investigation found a 2021 Ford Expedition veered off the road in the outer lane of Barnett Shoals Road and crashed into two power poles and several trees.

Police said Willock died at the scene. He was 20. Lecroy, who was driving, was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and died as a result of her injuries.

A 21-year-old passenger received minor injuries, a 26-year-old passenger was seriously injured.

The crash came just hours after the Bulldogs celebrated their national championship victory with a parade and ceremony at Sanford Stadium. Georgia defeated TCU 65-7 in the National College Football Playoff Championship in Los Angeles on Monday night.

“UGA Athletic Association will work with our medical team, as well as our mental health and performance staff, to ensure we provide the best possible support for our staff and student-athletes who are going through this grief,” the university said in a statement. . . “We are unable to comment further at this time, but we ask everyone to continue to support those involved in your prayers.”

At 6’7 and weighing 335 pounds, Willock played in all 15 games for the Bulldogs last season, including starting at right guard in wins over Tennessee and Kentucky. He was ranked #39 nationally by ESPN Recruiting and #17 in New Jersey as a senior at Paramus Catholic High School in 2020.

According to Lecroy’s LinkedIn account, she has been working as a recruiting analyst in Georgia since May 2021. She previously worked as a training specialist and sports marketing promotion trainee for a sports association. A native of Toccoa, Georgia, LeCroy received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sports management and politics from UGA, according to her LinkedIn account.
