The quilters of Jess Bend, a small town in rural Alabama, are known the world over for culture, traditions that date back to slavery and earlier. Their quilts – works of the highest and sublime craftsmanship, design, utility and art – are artifacts of the challenges and triumphs of generations. Through the organization and work of the patchwork craftsmen, black history and the power of collective and intergenerational collaboration extended far beyond the city of G Bend. The legacy of Gee’s Bend’s patchwork craftsmen is at the center of the rich traditions of African American art, literature, music, dance, and crafts that indelibly define and celebrate American culture.
