With Valentine’s Day approaching, let’s talk about flowers. In the world of flowers, be careful what you give, how much and what color… it all means something.
Yellow daisies signify friendship and joy, orchids signify encouragement, and Things Green’s Nick Federoff says carnations are always safe. The flower to be especially careful with is the rose. Don’t just pick a color you like and a random number – they both carry a message.
“These roses have a lot of meanings, we have to be careful with that… one rose makes one statement, but if you give a dozen roses, you better make sure it has a diamond ring attached, so be careful. mean it,” Fedoroff said.
Giving one rose means love at first sight, three say “I love you” and a dozen is a new level… it’s asking someone to be yours.
Fine. So you get this bouquet… and you want the cut flowers to stay here for as long as possible. Federoff shares some tips for extending the life of cut flowers. First, immediately dip the stems into the water and cut the stems while they are under water. Federoff says the stems immediately absorb water, extending their lifespan. Then place the cut bouquet in water with a couple of drops of bleach. One flower, just use one drop. You can also add aspirin, sugar or fertilizer to the water and change the water every couple of days. Federoff says all this should keep the flowers alive for a couple of weeks.
