Fun with foam swords! The Carlsbad Group Invites the Community to Join Foam Sword Fights

Every Saturday there is a battle in the Poinsettia Park in Karlovy Vary.

Styrofoam sword fighting, that is.

“Basically we’re a fantasy foam fight… the best way to describe it is pickup sport,” said Brian Middo, Duke of Siar Gaeta amtgardgroup.

“Anyone can join, we always welcome those who wish. You can come, we have a whole bag of extra swords and you can run and fight and have a great time,” he said.

Now I want to make it clear that I didn’t know much about real-time fantasy RPGs or amtgard when I took on this story, but Middo explained it to me.

“This is amtgard, the name of the sport. I am the duke of this little establishment. Duke only this is Park, he explained. There are mostly parks all over the country. Each has a manager depending on the size of the park. They can range from baron to duke to king if you’re a big enough park.

A couple of weeks ago, Middaugh went semi-viral when he posted a post on Reddit inviting everyone to come out and fight them.

“He exploded. I think it has 100,000 views, 500 reposts, and here we are, people are coming out,” Middo said.

Players from the Siar Gaeta amtgard group begin a foam sword fight at Poinsettia Park in Carlsbad, California on December 3, 2022.

Dalton Mahronik was one of the new players.

“I’m here for the first time. I’ve always been interested in these things,” Mahronik said. – It looks like a lot of fun. I said, “Why not? Don’t take yourself too seriously.”

He said he would return not only for fun but also for exercise, saying, “It’s a lot of fun to forget the rest of the world and embrace your inner child.”

Other players we met came out from Mira Mesa and Rancho Penasquitos to join in the fun.

Middau said shows like Game of Thrones and The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power spark a deeper interest in the fantasy world.

“It’s a sport where everyone can shine… they can get some practice, they can dress up in fun clothes and not take things too seriously,” Middo said. “You just go out and have fun. There are people who take it very seriously and it’s great for them.”

No experience is required to join Siar Gaeta on Saturdays and Middaugh says it’s great for beginners.

“In principle, anyone can come. We absolutely invite everyone and everyone. You have to have a good attitude,” he says. “The only thing you need is great shoes, comfortable clothes. We have all the weapons, all the equipment you need. We can equip you. Come out with a positive attitude and enjoy the fight.”

The group meets every Saturday at 13:00 in the Poinsettia Park in Karlovy Vary.
