Full LIRR service begins at Central Station on February 27th.

Long Island Rail Road trains will begin running to Grand Central Station on February 27, with about 300 trains arriving or departing daily at Grand Central Madison’s newly opened platforms, the MTA said on Wednesday.

The announcement follows the opening of the LIRR platforms on January 25 at a depth of 175 feet under the street. Planning for the $11.1 billion Grand Central Madison project began in 1997.

The LIRR Grand Central service currently consists of block trains to and from Jamaica, Queens. The MTA stated that full service would begin after the new Grand Central operation passed its extortion period.

“The new schedules will be a major boost to the local economy and efforts to get people back into offices, theaters and shops,” MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber said Wednesday.

All 11 LIRR locations will now offer service to Grand Central Madison and Pennsylvania Station, albeit with transfers in some cases.

The MTA said service to Grand Central Madison will include 296 trains per day, part of a system-wide increase that will serve a total of 936 LIRR trains each day.

“This is the largest service increase in LIRR history,” said Katherine Rinaldi, LIRR interim president. The flight increase also includes 36 additional daily trains to the Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn.

When work began on Grand Central Madison, they were originally expected to be completed in less than 10 years and for less than $3 billion.

But mismanagement and cost overruns have delayed the complex project, which required connecting the long-unused lower level of the 63rd Street F train tunnel to the LIRR tracks in Queens while carving out a new 17-story station under Grand Central Station.

Even so, the discovery of a faulty fan in December pushed back the station’s opening from December to the end of January.

The new train schedule was posted Wednesday on the MTA website.
