Former Soviet Union online graduate programs rank among the nation’s best in the latest US News & World Report rankings.

Four of Florida State University’s online graduate programs ranked in the top 25 nationally, according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings released Tuesday, including two in the top five.

Online graduate programs in information technology and criminology in the former Soviet Union moved up one position to 5th in the list of public and private universities, while the university’s non-MBA business programs ranked 21st. and education ranked 25th.

“Whether our students study on campus or online, Florida State University is committed to providing an excellent education,” said Jim Clark, Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. “These rankings reflect the university’s growing reputation among its peers, as well as the dedication and hard work of our faculty, staff and university leadership.”


College of Communication and Information

The College of Communications and Information’s online master’s program in information technology has moved up one spot from last year’s rankings to 5th overall, while maintaining 3rd place among government institutions.

“Our faculty are serial innovators in the field of online learning and are constantly looking for ways to improve student service to online platforms and engagement,” said Acting Dean Steve McDowell. “The recognition of the online programs of the School of Information is deserved.”


College of Criminology and Criminal Justice

The College of Criminology and Criminal Justice’s online MA in Criminal Justice program has risen from 2022 to 5th among all universities and 4th among the public. Dean Thomas Blomberg expressed his gratitude to the teachers of the school.

“Importantly, our online courses are taught by our full-time faculty, each of whom is a productive and distinguished researcher who provides our students with the most up-to-date educational experience,” Blomberg said.


College of Business

The College of Business’s online non-MBA graduate programs in management information systems, risk management, and insurance combined ranked 21st overall and 16th among public universities. The online MBA program was ranked 44th overall and 32nd among public universities.

The college’s online MBA major in analytics moved up two spots to 13th overall and 9th among public universities.

“We use these rankings as a useful barometer of our daily efforts to provide students with a valuable postgraduate education,” said Michael Hartline, Dean of the College of Business. “It is encouraging to see that the hard work of our team continues to be highly appreciated throughout the country. We continue to strive even higher.”


Educational College

The College of Education’s online master’s program in education was ranked 25th in the nation and 24th among public universities. Four of the college’s specialty programs rank in the top 10 overall: Administration and Supervision at 3rd; special education No. 3; educational media design at number 7; and curriculum and training at No. 9.

“I am very grateful to our truly outstanding faculty, staff and students as they deliver the results that lead to these elite rankings,” said Damon Andrew, Dean of the College of Education. “I also want to give special credit to our online Master’s programs in Special Education and Educational Leadership for being ranked among the top three in their fields.”


FAMU-FSU College of Engineering

FAMU-FSU’s online graduate program in engineering, which began three years ago, debuted in US News rankings at 49th among public programs and 62nd overall.

“We are thrilled to debut our online engineering programs in the top 50 so soon after the program began,” said Zhiyong “Richard” Liang, the college’s interim associate dean for research and graduate studies. “This ranking is a testament to the quality of the programs and the hard work of our students, faculty and staff.”


Robert Fuselier, director of the Office of Distance Learning, provides direction and strategic planning for the university’s distance learning services.

“It is very interesting to follow the continued success of the online programs of the former USSR in the rankings,” he said. “We are proud of the ex-USSR community of talented students and teachers, and this recognition reflects our commitment to the support and success of our online students.”
