Former Greensburg Police Detective Runs for Mayor

February 8th. A former Greensburg police detective is seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor.

Jerry Verneil, 60, said he was motivated to run for office following the recent arrest of a police chief by federal investigators, leaving the city’s third officer indicted for the crime since 2016. Public Safety and Police Department, Verneil said.

“The time has come to restore the integrity of the department and restore the trust of the public,” he said.

Verneuil lived in Greensburg for 27 years and began his 37-year law enforcement career in Irvine. There he volunteered for the city fire department.

From 1994 to 2015, Verneil worked as a Greensburg police officer and detective. During this time, he was involved in several high-profile murder and drug-related investigations and arrests.

After leaving the police force, Verneuil worked as an agent for the State Attorney General’s Office, investigating drug and government corruption cases. He is retired.

Verneuil and his wife Barbara Rowe Verneuil have two adult children who are police officers. He continues to work with law enforcement as a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 56 and the Westmoreland County Law Enforcement Officers Association, and is involved with the Greensburg Fire Department Hose Company 8 and the Boward Fire Department.

Verneuil cited three arrests of officers associated with the city’s police department as a motive for running for mayor:

— Sean Denning, 41, of Delmont, who served as chief, was arrested last month after federal officials said he acted as a go-between to link a confidential informant to drug dealers in California.

— Kenneth Burke, 35, from Greensburg was arrested in July in connection with a domestic violence incident. He’s scheduled for a pretrial conference next month.

— Robert Shapiro II, 49, of Latrobe served a year’s probation for rigging truck inspections. He was arrested in 2016.
