Flu Positive Dropouts: 6 FluView Notes

Of more than 96,000 samples tested for influenza in US clinical laboratories in the week ending January 7, 8.6% were positive, according to the latest CDC FluView report. That figure hovered around 25 percent for weeks on end in December.

Overall, there is still a decline in influenza activity in most areas.

Five more notes from the report:

1. Approximately 12,400 laboratory-confirmed influenza patients were hospitalized in the week ending January 7. For reference, in the week ending December 3, nearly 26,000 flu patients were hospitalized.

2. In the week ending January 7, there were five influenza-related childhood deaths, with There were 79 childhood deaths from influenza.

3. About 4 percent of outpatient visits were for flu-like illness—that is, fever plus cough or sore throat, not laboratory-confirmed flu—in the first week of January, marking a sixth consecutive week of declines in incidence.

5. Twenty-three states and regions reported high or very high levels of influenza activity in the week ending January 7, compared with 39 that reported the same in the week prior.
