Fireball over California: Video shows bright streaks of light over NorCal skies
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Look at that fireball in the sky! People reported seeing it as far north as Sacramento and as far south as Fresno.
ABC7 spoke to an astronomer at the Smithsonian who told us it was a piece of the International Space Station’s satellite dish.
He says it could be classified as “space junk”.
It has been orbiting the Earth’s atmosphere for several years, and experts knew it would re-enter sometime on Friday, but they didn’t know exactly when or where.
It ended up flying over Sacramento around 21:30.
McDowell says there is no danger to those who see him.
It will break into very small pieces before it hits the ground.
Based on the trajectory, he suggests that these fragments likely landed near Yosemite National Park.
