FDNY lieutenant injured in Staten Island fire discharged from hospital

The FDNY lieutenant who was “fortunate” to be alive after being injured in a major fire on Staten Island was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday.

Lieutenant Bill Doody of Ladder 84 was wheeled out of Staten Island University North Hospital as friends, family, colleagues and hospital staff burst into cheers and well wishes.

FDNY Lieutenant Bill Doody was discharged from Staten Island University Hospital on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 in Staten Island, New York.

“All the brothers who carried me out of the fire and brought me here, all the guys who cooked the food, the guys who walked by, all the good wishes and prayers – it’s absolutely amazing.” Doody said with his family next to him.

He was one of three firefighters seriously injured in a fire that destroyed a couple of homes in the Staten Island duplex on Shotwell Avenue off Waring Avenue in Arden Heights on February 17, officials said.

All three were taken to a Staten Island hospital.

“I can’t say enough about the care they provide throughout our unit when we have members here, which is unfortunately quite common,” FDNY Section Chief John Hodgens said outside the hospital on Wednesday. “Billy was one of the more seriously injured members of [and] today is a great day when he leaves the hospital.”

FDNY Lieutenant Bill Doody was discharged from Staten Island University Hospital on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 in Staten Island, New York.

While hospitalized, Doody underwent two surgeries, including a skin graft.

“Firefighter Doody was very lucky, he was literally on fire,” said Dr. Michael Leslie Cooper, a plastic surgeon who works at the hospital. “Recovery was not easy. Removing the burnt tissue causes a lot of pain.”

Last year’s fire, which was exacerbated by strong winds on a winter day, resulted in 19 other firefighters being slightly injured.

“I’m kidding, if I had known that I would be treated so well, I would have burned myself years ago,” Doody joked.
