FDNY EMT murder accused Yadir Arroyo recited the alphabet after passers-by grabbed him to hold him at the scene.

A man accused of killing a beloved Bronx ambulance crew began bizarrely reciting the alphabet after passers-by grabbed him as he fled the scene of the murder, an eyewitness testified Thursday at a suspect’s murder trial.

Ralph Alonso, a budget analyst for the Department of Sanitation, spoke of the chaotic scene after FDNY EMS technician Yadira Arroyo was hit by her ambulance — with several strangers, including a police officer hitting drug-addicted suspect Jose Gonzalez as he walked. away from the slaughter.

“We grabbed him, put him on the ground,” said a Bronx resident and former Marine who went to buy lottery tickets a few minutes ago. “I sat on top of him, just making sure he couldn’t get up.”

FDNY EMT Yadira Arroyo was hit and killed when Jose Gonzalez impounded her ambulance in the Bronx on March 16, 2017.

Gonzalez told Alonso to get off him before going through the letters of the alphabet in random order, a witness said on the second day of the long-delayed trial.

Alonso, who identified the suspect in the Bronx courtroom, recalled holding Gonzalez’s hand as the policeman handcuffed the defendant. Gonzalez, 31, with 31 previous arrests, licked his lips nervously at the defense table, Alonso testified.

A second witness, NYPD Officer Dino Vucetovic of the 43rd Precinct, recalled the wild scene after an emergency call was made on his walkie-talkie at 10:13 a.m. Arroyo was dead when he arrived on the scene, and Vucetovich described how the suspect was placed in a police car, where he fell asleep or passed out.

José González at the start of his murder trial on February 8, 2023. He is accused of fatally mowing down FDNY EMT Yadira Arroyo in the Bronx in 2017.

And NYPD detective Patrick Curran testified that Gonzalez was a “quiet and ordinary person” when he was placed in a cell at the 43rd Precinct police station.

The trial began on Wednesday, nearly six years after Gonzalez was accused of hijacking and running over Arroyo’s ambulance as her partner Monique Williams watched in horror on March 16, 2017. Arroyo, a 14-year ER veteran, was a beloved colleague and mother of five boys.

Prosecutors and several defense attorneys fought over 50 hearings before Gonzalez was found fit to stand trial in the high-profile death case. He was eventually found fit to prosecute in September to end a drawn-out legal battle.

The defendant was charged with murder, manslaughter, manslaughter of a vehicle and driving under the influence of drugs.

A Bronx judge rejected a mistrial challenge by Gonzalez’s lawyer Thursday after the lawyer said there was a problem firing 20 jurors who would not be paid by their employers.

“There is no systematic exception here,” Assistant District Attorney George Suminsky said. “I won’t bore the court because I think the court raised a lot of questions that I wanted to raise.”

Colleagues and members of Arroyo’s family again showed up for the hearing and were once again tasked with sitting nearby while the video of her final moments played.

“This brings me back to the first day. Watching the video over and over again only opens that wound. It doesn’t close, it just cries and gets damp,” Ali Hernandez, the aunt of the slain rescuer, said. “This is terrible. I told my brother that I wish they would stop playing the video – when I see Monique screaming for her to get up, oh God, you have no idea what this is doing to me.”
