Father accused of abandoning baby in Salt City market, police said, mother was repeatedly beaten on the same day

Syracuse, New York. A Syracuse man beat his child’s mother, partially amputating her finger, before abandoning them. 5-month-old daughter in the Salt City market the same day, police court records say.

Justin Hughes, 26, was arrested this week after police said he abandoned a baby at a market on Jan. 18.

On the same day, Hughes punched and kicked 21-year-old Alice Fenton in the face and body, police said. He repeatedly beat her after an argument between them, Fenton told police in a statement filed with the court.

The two were in Hughes’ mother’s garage at 542 Gifford Street around 12 noon with their daughter when Hughes told Fenton that he thought she was cheating on him, Fenton wrote. According to Fenton, they argued while Hughes held their daughter in his arms.

Fenton told police that Hughes placed the child on the garage floor and started beating her. Fenton said she fell to the ground as Hughes continued to punch and kick her.

Her fingertip was severely injured and appears to have been partially amputated, she said in a statement. Hughes did not allow her to seek medical attention, she told police.

A statewide missing persons alert was sent out the same day after staff at the Salvation Army Family Shelter in Syracuse reported that Fenton and her child were missing. The staff was concerned because Police said Fenton was making suicide posts on her Facebook page at the time.

Police said about 25 minutes after Fenton arrived at the orphanage, her baby was found alone in the market. It’s a five minute walk from the shelter.

Police said Hughes, the baby’s father, took the baby and dumped it in the market.

Police said at the time that Hughes had an arrest warrant for third-degree assault, first-degree criminal contempt, and endangering a child’s welfare.

On Monday, police arrested Hughes on these and other charges. Police said he was wanted on several arrest warrants.

Syracuse police have been looking for Hughes since January 18, when he brought the baby to the market and left her there alone.

Hughes is currently being held in the Onondaga County Justice System, where a $10,000 cash bond and a $50,000 bail have been set.
