Family demands answers after missing woman was found dead on Sunday

The family of Jessica Martinez continued to grieve the loss of a young mother, wife, sister and friend on Sunday after they discovered her body days after her wrecked car was found abandoned in the same area.

Mario Morales, Martinez’s husband, said she was working as a waitress at a bar in North Dallas from Thursday evening until early Friday morning, when she informed him she was driving home around 00:40 on Friday.

Morales did not receive a response from her and assumed that she decided to stay late at work, although he called and texted many times. He then went to her place of work, but did not find her.

“First, I called the police to see what we could do about the message. He’s like, “Well, you know, it’s not uncommon for young ladies to break up or end relationships just like that without warning,” Morales recalls. “I sat on it for a few minutes and thought, ‘No, I’m going to go to the police station and file a statement,’ and he sort of said the same thing again. I’ve gone a little further. I said, “I just want to know if she might have been wrecked, or tell me there’s a hospital she might have been in.”

He said that once he gave the license plate number to his wife’s car, law enforcement was able to see that the car was connected to the accident.

According to Morales, the officer said the 911 call sounded like Martinez was arguing with a man in the car. Morales continued to contact other precincts in an attempt to file a missing person’s report.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said there was indeed an accident on I-35 southbound at about 00:59 Friday at the junction with Woodall Rogers. According to the sheriff’s office, no one was around the car at the time.

“After that, the sheriff’s office showed up, they found the abandoned car and just towed it,” Morales said. They didn’t search the area. They didn’t even try to look for an injured person or a person fleeing a car accident, but simply towed him away and said he was abandoned.”

The sheriff’s office did not share details other than that officers responded to the accident.

Morales realized how bad the accident was when he saw the car in the impound lot, where he found his wife’s phone inside the car, but she was still missing.

The Martinez family began to gather, and her older brother, Dario Manzo, flew in from California to help with the search.

“None of them could take the time to try to find her,” Manzo said with tears in his eyes. “It took us two hours to find my sister.”

Dallas police have confirmed the identity of a woman whose body was found on the 800 block of the N. Stemmons Freeway southbound. It is located directly below the site where the accident occurred early on Friday morning.

Manzo said he noticed the abandoned building and unsuccessfully tried to get inside. He eventually found two guards and asked about his sister. The guards said that they often take regular walks around the building and that Manzo is not allowed into the building.

He said they were back around the front of the building trying to get through the fence when his other sister saw Martinez’s body through one of the holes in the fence.

“It’s heartbreaking and it makes me really sad to realize that in a city like Dallas with so many cops and sheriffs that none of them took the time to really try to find her, like I said it took us two hours to find her. my sister and there was nothing they could do about it,” Manzo said.

“Now I am in a daze, I believe that this is a nightmare that we will wake up from, and now it is an emotional rollercoaster, there are times when it hits in waves. It’s just very confusing,” said Morales, who was married to her for three years.

He said they were supposed to celebrate their daughter’s second birthday next month, but now they’re grappling with the fact that she won’t have a mother to grow up with.

Much remains unknown as to what led to the accident and how Martinez’s body ended up outside the fenced area.

Dallas police said the cause of death will be determined by the Dallas County Medical Examiner. A DPD spokesperson said it is now being investigated as an unexplained death.
