Explore, Play, Rock Out: 3 Upstate New York Museums Ranked Among the Best in the US

Upstate New York has three museums that rank among the best in the United States, ranging from nature exploration to pop culture exhibits from childhood memories.

USA Today enlists the help of experts to determine the best in the country, and then readers have their say on who ranks in the top ten in various categories. New York State has been home to many past winners, including Best Haunted Hotel and Best Apple Orchard.

The town square of Corning, New York, was recently ranked the second-best in the nation, behind only Campus Martius Park in Detroit, Michigan.

Here are the competitions in which upstate New York was the best in the state:

Best Pop Culture Museum – No. 4: The Strong National Museum of Play

Rochester’s strong play museum delivers a big dose of childhood nostalgia with its Toy Hall of Fame receiving new inductees every year. You can also explore the world’s largest collection of gaming-related artifacts by visiting the International Center for the History of Electronic Games and pressing buttons on vintage video games in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Be sure to visit the pinball fields, the Wegmans Super Kids Market, which looks like a working grocery store, and stop for photos on the porch of the Sesame Street exhibit.

Best Music Museum – #4: Bethel Woods Museum

Best Science Museum – #2: The Wild Center

What better way to learn about nature than in the largest protected area in the United States. Nationally ranked #2, The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, Adirondacks is set on a 115-acre campus that is home to over 900 live animals. Its main attraction is the Wild Walk, which takes guests through the treetops and above for stunning views and interactive exhibits.
